Al11Mn4 formation on Al8Mn5 during the solidification and heat treatment of AZ-series magnesium alloys

The crystallography and kinetics of Al 11 Mn 4 formation on 8 5 have been studied in magnesium alloys AZ80 / AZ91 AZ31. During solidification, was promoted by low cooling rates where triclinic nucleated rhombohedral particles with one multiple related orientation relationships (ORs) their variants. grew as (010) plates that were commonly twinned the interrelationships amongst twins, twins -Al ORs are discussed. solid state heat treatment at 410 °C, transformed into a core-shell reaction cracking shell. solid-state consistent interface controlled growth. results show can be used to tailor Al-Mn compound contact matrix (Mg) phase which may enable some control corrosion performance.
